Victory Part Two

The rain poured over their umbrellas as Bushra and Carmella hugged and smiled. They were meeting after many days. Many days later after that first meeting when they had discovered each other and had decided to become friends.

Bushra snapped shut her umbrella, making the raindrops sprinkle around her. The girls walked into the restaurant giggling and cheerful, ready to unburden their heavy hearts.

The girls met from time to time and behaved like good friends. A passer by would think they were soul sisters.  though secretly they were keeping an eye on each other and making sure neither one went back to him.

‘How have you been?' Bushra asked Carmella.

‘I haven’t been doing very well at all’, Carmella said almost tearfully. Carmella was a mess. She had lost her job and she was back home living with her brother again. The loss of Gilbert had devastated her.  She had thought he was bringing hope into her life. A new start after her divorce.

Bushra watched Carmella with pity. The girl was so naive, she trusted Bushra and believed everything she said. Bushra felt sorry for Carmella but she needed her.

Bushra knew how Carmella was obsessed with creating fake social media accounts and using these to gather information, so she could use her madness to discover information about the others in Gilbert’s game and she could talk to someone about it all.

For now she needed to make Carmella believe that she was her friend. Although, Bushra didn’t understand why Carmella was troubled to this extent by their discoveries about Gilbert, after all she had only been with Gilbert for 2 months, while Bushra had been his partner for 10 years. It was on and off and they had split up and got back together countless times, but she had reason to be devastated.

Bushra couldn’t let Carmella see how in reality she needed her. Bushra had so many friends but she couldn’t be open with any of them. Who could she open up to? To whom could she reveal all  that she had suffered over the years to keep their relationship together and now to have Gilbert betray her like this in the most humiliating and soul destroying way?

She couldn’t reveal the deepest darkest secrets to her friends. She couldn’t tell any of her friends that there was a third woman besides herself and Carmella - that Gilbert had impregnated someone and she was due to give birth at any time.  All while he had proposed to her and she was supposed to marry him. And the untimely end of her own pregnancy? She was still reeling from the shock of it.

However Carmella, this pawn, she could open up to the girl and she could use her for support too, so she served a dual purpose. Bushra wanted to punish Gilbert by making friends with these girls to show him that she knew exactly which lies he had been telling others and how she knew what kind of a double, triple life he led.

She thought he had loved her. 10 years of her life she had given to this man. She had left her first boyfriend for him. She had moved cities for him. She had given her youth to him, her best years, her twenties but he had broken her in return and stolen her light.  She would punish him.

Bushra was struggling with her loneliness and depression but she couldn’t let Carmella see this. She put on a mask and had to be strong because if she dropped one ball her mask would fall off and everyone in her world would see how broken she truly felt.

The Enchanting One

Morris sat at the best seat at the bar. It was one of the most expensive restaurants in London, high end, dimly lit, decorated lavishly, the music - trance like, the best drinks and the finest cuisine.  He held an old fashioned in his hand, and was seated in the darkest part of the room; the arm with the drink resting on the edge of the bar, his legs crossed over as he leaned back against the chair giving him the best position to survey the room. He wore a perfectly fitted three-piece suit made of the finest wool. A bow necktie completed his affluent appearance, and his jacket hung open, showing the waistcoat beneath which was moulded perfectly against his broad chest. Morris gently tapped his finger against the glass as he scanned the room and watched the girls walk past him.  The waitresses, the heiresses, the hostess, the girls who were here for a birthday meal and wouldn't be able to afford this place on a casual night out; the wives of the wealthy barristers and investm...

A Viewing

“Our second son works as a manager in a bank and his wife is a Nurse.  She is here with us of course.  Our fourth son is at university and my son Juber as you know has completed a law degree”. It was a chance to display the successes of her family and Mrs Islam was not one to let go of an opportunity to list each of her children’s occupations including professional titles or what she understood of them.  She wasn’t one of the more staunch mothers who would not have shied away from mentioning which university her children had attended being knowledgeable about University league tables and the prestige attached to particular faculties of higher education.  Mrs Islam wasn’t an egotistical woman but she discussed her children’s occupations and achievements as much as any other family or mother would coming from a Bengali household; with a certain amount of pride and with the simple satisfaction of saying her children were educated.  It did not really matter whet...

Victory Part 1

She had won, she had got him.  He was hers again and yet she was stuck here with nothing to do and he wasn't giving her any attention.  Gilbert sat with his friends in the room next door editing photos and drinking beer. Bushra sat on the bed staring at her phone trying to find some way to kill the boredom. She had travelled - correction took an actual  flight - all the way from Paris to see him and he was practically ignoring her. Bushra didn't want to complain because she really wanted them to make it work this time and she knew how he disliked women who complained.  He reminded her often enough. Gilbert had been telling her ever since they got back together that the others were too demanding, too negative. Mira apparently had dark negative energy and had always been argumentative. A woman who craved drama he had told her. 'Bushra, this girl, she would always want to go out, she never wanted to stay at home. I'm a traveler, it's what I do for a living as y...
